At least once a year you'll find at least somebody ranting about how anime is just rape, child porno, porno in general, and just palin sick and perverted. Now, depending on what you've seen of anime, or hanvet seen, this is, and isnt true. For the most part, about 70% of all Japanese animation around is about PG rating, girls in bikins, some gore, a few sexual inuendos thrown around here and there, and thats about it. You also have more violent anime with semi nudity which would be around R rated in the States. then there's Hentai which is the live-action equiveletnt of NC-17 or XXX.(no, not Triple X, the movie with Vin Diesel)
Now, we get into what these people rant about. Hentai. Hentai, by translation means: Porno/Pervert, so you get the basic idea of what this kind of show is. Hentai is often perverted, lude and disgusting. It is basically the same as watching the pono channel on TV, there are entire series made out of stuff like this.
So then anime is all porno? No, imagine anime as being just like real life, there is good, and bad, the sick, and the clean, for the most part, anime is steralized enough not to be offensive, but with enough "skin" to be enticing.
There are obviously different genres of anime: Childrens: which includes shows like Card Captor Sakura, Pokemon, and Digimon, which all contain little or no violence.
Then you have Teen type shows like Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam, Zoids, Cowboy Bebop, and Iny Yasha, which include violence as part of the plot, and the possibility of nudity on the side, but you dont see it very often.
Then there are the Mature shows, which incude violence and nudity, but the nudity is often suggested or seen from behind, so you arent really sure they are actually nude, but often they do show women from the waist up, not full body, just top half, or full for a very short period of time. These are shows like BGC 2040, 08th MS Team, Trigun and Evangelion.
And fianlly you have the Adult/Hentai programs, these usually lack anything resembling a plot, and if there is one it has to do with the main character, if female, stripping, or if male, getting off to the now nude female standing in front of him. Mostly perverted and making of little sense, these shows are responsible for animes bad rap in America. It's not the shows fault that they contain what they do, but it's usually the fact that are so easily accessbale to people on the open market, make purchaseing them harder and you'll see complaints go down.
