Ghost In The Shell
In the near future, the Internet has expanded to become an everyday necessity. Humans are no longer restricted by the shortcomings of their own bodies. Brain augmentations and data links allow people direct brain access to the infinite Net. Also, the ability to create fully mechanical bodies that can house a human brain has been successfully realized. Sometimes, only the "ghost", that indefinable part of the human consciousness contained in the human brain, is all that remains of what was once a living body in these cyborgs. Of course, this technology comes with a price. The direct brain access to the web has allowed for the creation of "ghost hackers", terrorists who can directly access another's brain and reprogram their memories. While special barrier programs in the technologically augmented brain protect the individual "ghost", a highly skilled ghost hacker can sometimes defeat the barrier program.
It is in this world, that the Puppet Master, the world's most notorious ghost hacker, has become the ultimate terrorise. Superior hacking skills and the ability to remain completely anonymous have allowed the Puppet Master to terrorize the world with impunity. Officially, Section 6, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, started a secret program, known only as "Project 2501", to specifically combat the Puppet Master, but their efforts have been far from successful. When the computer programmer at the head of Project 2501 attempts to defect and the secretary of a diplomat in charge of treaty negotiations with a fledgling republic is ghost hacked, the problem of the Puppet Master is brought to the direct attention of the Internal Bureau of Investigation, Section 9.
In charge of the Section 9 team responsible for investigation and tracking down the Puppet Master is "Major" Motoko Kusanagi, an almost completely cybernetic women who is outranked only by Section 9 Chief Aramaki. Along with her partner and friend, Bateau, another cyborg, and the almost completely human rookie, Togusa, Kusanagi begins to find herself deeper and deeper in a web of lies and government intrigue. To make matters worse, her investigation of the Puppet Master leads her to question the integrity of her own "ghost". When the Puppet Master suddenly seems to take a profound interest her, the "Major" only finds herself further confounded by the mysteries of who the Puppet Master is, what Project 2501 is, and how Section 6 is involved with them both.  Yeah, it's all teaser, so sue me.
